Piki Te Ora - Healthcare Centre

Piki Te Ora is a not-for-profit GP clinic that has served the Linwood community for over 35 years, caring for more than 5,900 patients including Māori, Pacific peoples, refugees and whānau who often face the biggest barriers to accessing healthcare. As a charitable trust and very low cost access practice, they had outgrown a building that no longer matched the standard of care happening inside it. The layout was dated, the rooms were tight, and the space didn't reflect the warmth of the people using it. Our brief was not simply to renovate a building, but to create a welcoming, culturally safe space where patients and whānau would feel they belong.

We worked closely with the Piki Te Ora team from the outset, taking the time to understand their vision before a single line was drawn. The reworked layout improves circulation and storage so the clinic runs more efficiently, opening up an additional clinic room and making everyday spaces far more functional for staff and patients alike. A warm, natural palette of greens and timber runs throughout, grounded by a reclaimed timber reception counter with a detailed herringbone front that has become the standout feature and the heart of the clinic. Bilingual te reo Māori and English wayfinding threads through the whole space, from the reception logo to room and toilet signage, using bold colour, simple type and universal icons to make the clinic easy to navigate for everyone who walks in.

The result is a modern, functional and inviting environment that feels made for the community it serves. One moment captured it best. A kuia walked into the renovated clinic, saw the te reo Māori signage and welcoming surroundings, and exclaimed, "Oh, they've made it for us." Those few words summed up exactly what the project set out to do. We're proud to have helped Piki Te Ora create a place where their community truly feels welcome.
